But In the age of greed it seems that the welfare of men and women is at the bottom of the priority list when it comes to business. It is common sense to cater for human needs and nature, it is a simple thing to do. When it comes to modern day living it appears simplicity and common sense have been forgotten. Simple Human NatureĪlong with simplicity comes common sense. It was these simple principles that built one of the biggest retailers in the USA. They were simple yet effective, JC Penney is still going today and had a revenue of almost $13billion in 2013. With the rebrand came a new set of simple principles he wanted to build his company around, it became known as the “Penney Idea”. In 1913 a young American man named James Cash Penney had built a successful chain of 34 retail stores but was looking to take things to the next level, so he renamed his stores J.C Penney. In turn this great music made Motown an extremely successful company. The music producers at Motown abided by the KISS principle and with it they created some of the best pop/soul music the world has ever heard. Sometimes it seems people insist on making things harder than they need to be. In a world that is transforming at a rapid rate I feel it is a principle more people should try and apply to what they do in life. It is a principle that encourages people to simplify things instead of making them complicated. When you see it, the problem seems obvious, the solution simple, and something which could have been prevented with better front end planning - KISS.As the title suggests KISS is an acronym for “Keep it simple, stupid” and is a concept that some say originates from the U.S. “We gotta find a way to make this, fit into the hole for this, using nothing but that,” he concludes, placing both filters back on the table and pointing to the available materials. The lead engineer defines the problem verbally, visually, and simplistically.

In the movie, the engineers enter the room and dump a box of supplies (available to the astronauts) on a table. When NASA ground control realizes this, engineers are pressed to concoct a solution, demonstrating the successful application of KISS. This fact exemplifies a failure in executing the KISS principle between the designers of the LM (Northrop Grumman), the command and service modules (North American Aviation), and NASA. The command module’s CO2 filters are square. The LM CO2 filtration system uses cylindrical filters, all of which have been used up. As a result, the ship begins to develop an unsafe buildup of CO2. The LM is designed and equipped to provide two people 36 hours of life support, not three crew members the 96 hours it will take to get back to earth.

An incident necessitates three astronauts use the lunar module (LM), a ship built just for landing on the moon, as a lifeboat to survive.

My favorite example demonstrating the application of KISS, as well as the impact of failing to do so, is captured in a scene in the 1995 movie Apollo 13. By Rob Wright, Chief Editor, Life Science Leaderįollow Me On Twitter heard of the KISS (keep it simple, stupid) principle? The general idea behind it is that systems perform best when the design is simple, not complex.
